I'm the procurement person at a 14-person independent repair shop. For the past eight years, I've managed our parts budget—about $420,000 a year—negotiated with 40+ suppliers, and keyed every order into a cost-tracking spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is the reason I can tell you exactly what we overpaid for, what we returned, and what we should have noticed before clicking 'place order.'

This article is the checklist I run through before buying AISIN parts. It covers transmissions, thermostats, wheel bearings, and the stuff people assume is simple but isn't (alternators, for example). Whether you work at a shop, buy parts for a fleet, or just maintain your own vehicles, these six checks will keep you from making the mistakes I made.

Check #1: Verify It's the AISIN Official Store (or a Real Authorized Channel)

AISIN makes a ton of OE parts—automatic transmissions, water pumps, thermostats, hub bearing assemblies, brake parts, and more. That name recognition cuts both ways. There are plenty of listings that claim to be AISIN but have nothing to do with the company, especially when someone searches for an AISIN transmission for sale and clicks the cheapest result. AISIN manufacturing sites operate under IATF 16949, the automotive quality management standard. That only matters if you're actually getting the real part.

The safest starting point is the AISIN official store on their aftermarket site (aisinworld.com), or the verified official storefronts on major marketplaces. Check the seller's official badge, look for the AISIN logo in the store banner, and confirm the warranty terms are printed right in the listing. If the store name is 'parts_wholesale_js' and the photo is a transmission with the AISIN logo tilted at a weird angle, move on.

One thing I appreciate about the official channel: no small-order discrimination. Whether we order one $50 thermostat or a $4,500 transmission, we get the same catalog access, the same spec sheets, and the same warranty registration process. Today's small order can become a $20,000 annual account. The suppliers who took our early small orders seriously are the ones who have that relationship now.

Check #2: Cross-Reference the OEM Part Number, Not the 'Fits' List

The listing title can say 'fits 200+ models.' That tells you almost nothing. The OEM number on your old part, or a dealer parts diagram, tells you everything.

Example: a customer asks us about a 2013 Infiniti JX35 alternator. Quick reality check—AISIN doesn't manufacture that alternator. It's a Hitachi or Mitsubishi Electric unit (I'd have to check which supplier Nissan used that production year, but it isn't AISIN). So if a listing says 'AISIN alternator for JX35,' it's wrong before you click. The cure is the same either way: pull the Nissan OEM part number (the 23100-XXXXX series) and match it against the catalog data for the brand you're actually buying.

I only started doing this after skipping it once and paying for it. We ordered a dozen 'fits your application' water pumps, and eleven had the wrong pulley offset. The restocking fee ate $187; the overnight freight to get the correct ones cost another $312. The original list price looked great. The all-in cost was awful.

Check #3: Know Whether You Need a Reverse Acting Thermostat

This is the step that trips up the most people, including shop buyers who should know better. A standard thermostat opens when engine temperature rises, letting coolant flow to the radiator. A reverse acting thermostat is designed for systems where the flow path requires the valve to do the opposite—closing or redirecting as temperatures climb. You'll see them in certain European engines and in some cooling circuits where the bypass logic is inverted.

It's easy to assume a reverse acting thermostat is an upgrade or a newer version of the standard part. It isn't. It's a different failsafe direction. Put a standard thermostat where a reverse acting one belongs, and the engine can run cold at highway speed or overheat in traffic, depending on how the circuit is routed. One of our customers learned the hard way: a $28 thermostat mistake became a $312 labor bill before anyone diagnosed the obvious.

AISIN makes both types, and the spec is usually clear in the product title. If the engine calls for reverse acting and the listing just says 'thermostat,' keep searching until you see the exact term.

Check #4: Compare Total Delivered Cost, Not the Ticket Price

Ticket price is the number everyone remembers. Total delivered cost is the number that hits your account. People think a dealership part costs more because it's built better. In my experience, it's the opposite—the part is often the same AISIN part, and the extra cost comes from distribution layers, not materials. Same quality, different checkbook impact.

I built a TCO spreadsheet after getting burned twice in the same quarter, and I use it for every parts category now. Take an AISIN transmission for sale. The real math looks like this:

  • Base price of the transmission.
  • Freight. A transmission weighs 180+ pounds, and shipping runs $150–$250 unless it's included in the price.
  • Core charge on remanufactured units—typically $300–$600, refundable only if the old unit is returned in acceptable condition.
  • Tax and any 'handling fee' that quietly appears at checkout.

We compared quotes for a transmission last year. One supplier quoted $1,950 all-in. Another came in at $1,795, but then freight added $210 and the core deposit was $450—refundable, but we still had to float that money. If I'd looked only at ticket price, I'd have picked the second one. By my spreadsheet, the first one was $305 cheaper after freight and the deposit float.

People think the highest quote is the most expensive. Sometimes the cheap ticket price is the expensive one after you add everything on. That's the whole point of this check.

Check #5: Get the Wheel Bearing Repair Cost Split Into Parts and Labor

'How much to repair wheel bearing?' is one of the most searched repair questions, and there's no single answer. I tell customers it depends—kinda—on the bearing design, and then I give estimated line items.

From our last several AISIN hub assembly jobs (pricing I tracked in Q4 2024):

  • Parts: $85–$160 for an AISIN hub assembly, including a new axle nut. Most of our jobs land around $120–$150, give or take.
  • Labor: $150–$350 per side. Bolt-on hub assemblies are at the lower end. Press-in bearings run higher.
  • Alignment: $90–$140 afterward if the suspension geometry was disturbed, which it usually is.

So a realistic out-the-door total is about $300–$650 per side. If a quote comes in at $200 total, I want to know exactly what's inside that number. Nine times out of ten, the cheap quote means a cheaper part, a skipped alignment, or a labor estimate that balloons once the old bearing doesn't cooperate.

Check #6: Inspect the Box Before It Reaches the Install Bay

I added this check after a thermostat failed just two months after installation. The box looked perfect. The part worked fine for 60 days, then the customer's engine overheated on a highway trip. The date code on the failed unit was over three years old—it had sat on a warehouse shelf while the packaging stayed clean. The replacement was covered under warranty, but the labor wasn't, and the customer paid for a tow they didn't deserve.

Now every AISIN box gets a 30-second inspection when it lands: sealed packaging, correct part number on the label, and a legible date code. If the seal is broken or the date code is old, we do not install it. We send photos to the seller and request a replacement before the part touches a vehicle.

The Mistakes That Built This Checklist

People often assume a checklist like this exists because I'm cautious. It's actually the opposite. This list exists because I've been burned enough times that caution became the default. Everyone told me to verify OEM numbers before ordering. I didn't believe it mattered until eleven wrong water pumps showed up. Everyone told me ticket price was half the story. I didn't act until I ran a real TCO comparison and saw how much money was leaking out through freight, cores, and 'handling.'

One final piece of advice: keep your paperwork. AISIN's warranty process is straightforward, but it requires proof of purchase from an authorized channel. The shops that lose the invoice are the ones that pay for the same part twice.

Run these six checks before your next order. If you're anything like me, you'll probably catch at least one thing you were about to get wrong.
