I work on the quality side of an automotive drivetrain parts operation. That means I'm not the one selling you the kit or promising a quick fix. I'm the person who checks what was ordered against what actually shows up before it reaches a customer's shipping dock. Roughly 200 transmission and drivetrain kits pass through my station in a year, and more than a few first deliveries get rejected.
This checklist is for a repair shop, warehouse distributor, or OEM program buying an Aisin transmission rebuild kit. It's also useful when the platform is something like the 2016 Ram 3500 Aisin transmission. Follow it before you spend money, not after the parts arrive and the truck is already on a lift.
Use this when the diagnosis is already clear. If you're still chasing a noise, back up first. A rear axle whine or a shudder during tight turns usually belongs to a differential system, not to a transmission rebuild kit.
Step 1: Verify Which Aisin Transmission You Are Actually Working On
Take the application matching with some skepticism. The 2016 Ram 3500 Aisin transmission is commonly an Aisin AS69RC six-speed behind the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel. 'Commonly' is not the same as 'always'. Conventional models and cab-and-chassis versions can use different output shafts, and the transmission tag carries a code that a year/make/model lookup does not show.
Ask for the transmission model and code from the metal tag. If it's an AS69RC, confirm whether the order is for a standard, heavy-duty, or chassis-cab configuration. Then compare that to the OEM part number behind the aftermarket listing. The most expensive wrong part I've seen was bought using only year, make, and model.
Step 2: Ask What a Complete Kit Leaves Out
A rebuild kit should include friction plates, separator plates, sealing rings, gaskets, filter, and thrust washers. But not every box with the same name has the same contents. Some kits cover only the clutch packs and gaskets. Others include steels, updated snap rings, and a filter but no torque converter. There isn't a universal standard.

If the supplier gives a direct answer, that's a good sign. If they say it includes everything but cannot attach a BOM, expect surprises later. The goal isn't to find the lowest quote; it's to find the quote where the contents match the failure.
Before you throw away the old hard parts, lay the new kit next to them. The kit bag can look complete and still be missing a thin thrust washer or use a separator plate that is a few hundredths of an inch different. The old parts tell you what the transmission actually used. A website listing doesn't.
Step 3: Treat the Oil Pump as Its Own Decision
On a high-mileage build, the transmission oil pump deserves a separate line item. The pump feeds line pressure to the torque converter and to each clutch circuit. Wear does not always look dramatic. It can show up as excessive clearance between the pump gears and the housing, or as a worn bushing that lets pressure bleed past.
An Aisin transmission rebuild kit may include the pump seal and O-rings. That's fine if the pump body is in spec. In my experience, low pressure complaints on older Aisin units are often traced to pump clearance, not to the seal alone. Ask what measurements the kit expects you to take. If the pump housing is scored or the gear clearance is above spec, you need a new or remanufactured oil pump, not another seal.
Step 4: Check Date Codes and Traceability Before Stocking
Here's the step most people ignore. Mechanical parts look fine on the outside; seals don't. Rubber seals age, and friction material can degrade in hot storage. A kit with an old date code may be perfect, but I've sent back kits because the seals were hard and brittle after two years in a supplier's back room.
In my first year in receiving, I didn't think about date codes. That cost me a test failure and a reshipping fee. Now I ask for the lot date, country of origin, and a chain of custody before I approve anything. Packaging matters too. If a box says genuine Aisin, the label should be traceable to a real source. Under FTC advertising guidance at ftc.gov, product claims have to be truthful and substantiated. A label alone is not substantiation.
Step 5: Keep Differential System Parts in a Separate Work Order
If the same truck needs an Aisin transmission rebuild and axle work, don't combine them into one package. A differential system has its own bearings, seals, ring and pinion clearance specs, and lubrication requirements. Transmission kits are full of valve body parts, clutch components, and sealing rings. When the receiving clerk sees one purchase order with transmission parts and axle parts on the same line, bad things happen.
I recommend a separate line item or work order for anything that touches the differential system. The goal is not bureaucracy. It's to make mistakes visible before they happen.
Step 6: Put a Number on How It Shifts
Objective test data comes first: line pressures, shift timing, torque converter slip, and oil temperature. But there is still a place for driver feedback. The problem with asking 'does it drive okay?' is that you get a nod, not a measurement.
If you're not familiar with the term, a semantic differential scale is a rating scale with opposite words at each end. It asks the person taking the test to locate an impression between those two words. For shift quality it might look like this:
Abrupt 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 Smooth
Slushy 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 Firm
Search 'what is a semantic differential scale' and you'll find research guides and marketing survey tools. I use the same idea to make test-drive feedback comparable between rebuilds. It doesn't replace test equipment. It puts a number on the human side of quality.
Final Review Notes
Before I release an order, I ask four questions:
- Does the kit have a published bill of materials that matches the OEM clutch count and revision?
- Does the price include the oil pump sealing parts and front bushing, or are they separate?
- What is the lot date and traceability record from the actual manufacturer?
- If the order also includes differential system parts, why are they on the same purchase order?
A low quote can be honest. But I have learned to ask what is not included before I ask the price. The supplier who lists every fee and missing part upfront often looks more expensive at first and ends up costing less. At least, that's been my experience with transmission kits, torque converters, and rebuilders.
