How to Buy AISIN Parts Without Regret: A 6-Step Sourcing Checklist

I manage purchasing for a Tier 2 remanufacturing facility. We supply small OEMs and repair shops. I process 60 to 80 purchase orders a year, roughly $400,000 in annual parts spend, across about eight vendors. I report to both operations and finance.

Since I took over purchasing in 2020, I've settled on a six-step sourcing checklist. It won't make you an expert. It will keep you from buying the wrong part from a look-alike listing on a tight deadline.

Here's the thing: our purchase list includes AISIN water pump kits, connecting rods, DPF cleaning kits, and control arms. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The fundamentals haven't changed—check the part number, check the box, check the part. But the execution has.

The 6-Step AISIN Sourcing Checklist

Step 1: Search the exact part number, not the common name

If you need an AISIN WPK-810 new OEM water pump kit, type that whole string. Don't type 'AISIN water pump' and hope for the best. The full part number filters out rebuilt units and 'compatible' parts that use the same search terms.

WPK-810 is a kit, not just a pump. That means the box should contain the water pump, the gasket, and usually the required seal. If the listing photo shows only a pump, that's a sign you're not looking at the full kit. Ask for a parts list before you order.

Step 2: Confirm what 'OEM' actually means

The word 'OEM' carries weight. Per FTC advertising guidelines, claims have to be truthful and substantiated. A seller can call a part 'OEM-style' or 'OEM-compatible.' That doesn't make it an OEM part. If the listing says 'OEM' and the box doesn't have AISIN packaging or a matching AISIN logo, I put the order on hold.

To be fair, aftermarket parts are often fine. Does that make them OEM? No. It means you bought a different part. We found this on a water pump kit once: the pump itself was a genuine AISIN pump, but the gasket in the box was an aftermarket gasket. The listing said kit. The box said kit. The contents didn't match. That's why I compare the listing title, the box label, and the physical contents in the first incoming inspection.

Step 3: Verify a connecting rod's dimensions, not just its part number

Connecting rods are where I learned the hard way. The part number tells you the product family. It doesn't tell you rod length, journal diameter, or weight class. If you're ordering rods for a build, ask for the spec sheet before you place the PO.

We once ordered an 'OEM connecting rod' for a four-cylinder line. The rods were new, but the big-end bore was 48mm. We needed 47mm. The supplier took them back, but we lost a week. The engine builder wasn't happy. Now I check three things: the part number, the casting number, and the measured dimensions. All three.

Step 4: How to tell if your control arm is bad before ordering a replacement

Control arms get returned for a lot of reasons. Before you buy a replacement, do the five-minute check. This is how to tell if your control arm is bad without putting it on a lift:

  • Clunk or knock when driving over bumps at low speed. That usually points to the bushing or ball joint.
  • Steering wheel pull or wandering after hitting a pothole.
  • Tire wear that keeps showing up on one edge, even after alignment.
  • Excess play when you rock the wheel at 12 and 6 or 9 and 3.

This isn't a replacement for a real inspection. It's a triage list. It stops us from selling a control arm when the actual problem is a tie rod or a sway bar link. I've made that mistake. It costs more than the part—it costs the technician's confidence.

Step 5: Match the DPF cleaning kit to your actual process

DPF cleaning kits are different from metal parts. The chemistry matters as much as the hardware. There are spray cleaners, bench dip cleaners, and additives for thermal cleaning. If you buy a spray-in cleaner but your shop cleans cores by soaking, you bought the wrong kit. The same phrase—'DPF cleaning kit'—covers completely different processes.

Ask the supplier: Is this for cleaning the filter core in place, on a bench, or in an oven? What temperature does it need? Does the label claim 'recyclable' or 'biodegradable'? Per the FTC Green Guides, environmental claims need substantiation. If the label says it and the safety data sheet doesn't, I move on.

Step 6: Inspect the AISIN logo and packaging before it goes on the shelf

Check the AISIN logo on the box, the label, and the part itself. Every time. I know it sounds too simple. But in 2022, I compared two water pump kits side by side—same WPK-810 part number, same listing photo, different gasket material. The logo on the box was close, but the font was slightly off. That was the clue.

When I compared the authorized kit with the questionable kit, I finally understood why the OEM kit costs more. It's not the aluminum pump. It's the whole engineered kit: correct gasket, correct seal, correct torque spec sheet. People think the price is about the brand. Actually, it's about the included parts. The two are connected.

I only learned this after ignoring the same advice. Our usual vendor warned me about look-alike packaging. I didn't listen. We sold one water pump kit, it leaked at the gasket, and the customer came back. Now the AISIN logo goes on the incoming inspection sheet. Honestly, I'm not sure why some suppliers still send incomplete kits. My best guess is they assume the buyer already has the gasket or seal. Don't assume.

Before you place the PO: 3 notes

First, don't ask 'Who's cheapest?' Ask 'What's in the box?'

The lowest quoted price often isn't the lowest total cost.

Second, if a deal looks too good to be true, check the return policy before ordering. A 30% discount disappears fast when you have to pay return shipping and restocking fees.

Third, this was accurate as of my last order in Q4 2024. The market changes fast. Part numbers get revised, suppliers change, and listings get recycled. Verify current part numbers and packaging for your application.

That's it. Done. You don't need a complicated system. You need a repeating one.
