I've now tracked over 1,200 parts orders across six years, and the conclusion keeps getting louder: the cheapest quote is almost never the cheapest part. That's held true whether I'm buying a genuine Aisin WPT-207 engine water pump, an Aisin transmission for a Ram 2500, a set of Yeezy-style tail lights, a sports muffler, or a catalytic converter. When one of these transmissions needs replacing, the price gap is significant. As of late 2024, a genuine Aisin remanufactured AS69RC unit was running $4,200–5,500 plus core charge. Local rebuild shops quoted $2,800–3,800 for a "heavy-duty rebuild."
Here's what I've observed across our fleet and customer vehicles (sample: 11 budget rebuilds, 8 genuine remans over three years):
- Budget rebuilds: 3 out of 11 developed torque converter shudder or harsh shifting within two years.

Cosmetic parts are where aftermarket is genuinely fine—as long as you skip the bottom shelf. The $120 Yeezy-style tail light sets from no-name brands leak. I've personally seen condensation inside the housings within three months. The mid-tier brands ($250–400) that publish actual wiring diagrams and use proper sealing methods? Sports mufflers follow the same curve. A $90 universal muffler from an unknown brand will likely drone at highway speeds and can rust through in a year of winter driving. Again: not every aftermarket muffler is bad, and not every premium system is worth it. If a customer just wants a little more noise and plans to keep the car for two years, a $250 axle-back is probably fine. That's a judgment call, not a data point.
What Precious Metals Are in a Catalytic Converter (and Why You Should Care)
This is the one part where understanding the actual materials changes your buying decision.
There are three precious metals inside virtually every catalytic converter:
- Platinum (Pt) — used in the reduction catalyst to convert nitrogen oxides (NOx) into nitrogen and oxygen.
- Palladium (Pd) — the main oxidation catalyst in most gasoline vehicles; converts carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons.
- Rhodium (Rh) — the rarest and most expensive of the three; used in tiny amounts to boost NOx reduction efficiency.
Market prices fluctuate constantly. As of early 2025, palladium was trading somewhere around $900–1,100 per ounce, platinum around $900–1,000, and rhodium—this is the mind-bender—in the $4,000–5,000 range per ounce. That's down dramatically from its 2021 peak above $10,000, but rhodium remains the most valuable of the three. A typical catalytic converter contains roughly 2–7 grams of palladium, 1–4 grams of platinum, and 0.2–1 gram of rhodium, depending on engine size and emissions standard.
Do the math (I did, in the spreadsheet): the precious metals alone in a standard converter are worth about $100–300 at current prices. That's why catalytic converter theft is a nationwide problem. It also explains why a discount converter should raise red flags: manufacturers who cut precious metal loading to hit a lower price point are building something that might pass an emissions test at 10,000 miles but throw a P0420 catalyst efficiency code at 30,000. Replacing it means another 1.5–2 hours of labor, another diagnostic fee, and a customer who rightly feels burned.
For aftermarket converters, look for a CARB EO number (Executive Order, for California compliance) if you're in a CARB state, or at least a unit that explicitly meets EPA requirements under the Clean Air Act. And read the warranty terms—reputable aftermarket converters typically carry 5-year/50,000-mile or better coverage. If a converter doesn't come with a stated warranty, walk away.

After six years, here's my working rulebook:
- Genuine Aisin or OEM for anything in the coolant, oil, or drivetrain path. Water pumps, transmissions, oil pumps, timing components. Failure means collateral damage, not just a part replacement.
- Mid-tier aftermarket for aesthetics. Tail lights, wheels, body panels, mufflers. The requirement: the brand has actual engineering behind it and a real warranty.
- Emissions components: buy with your head, not your wallet. Know the precious metals, know the warranty, know the compliance standard.
- Never buy unbranded anything that rotates, seals, or carries exhaust gas. No engineering data, no warranty, no accountability.
I'm not 100% sure the premium brand is always worth it on exhaust systems, and I'll admit that freely. A lot depends on the car, the climate, and the customer's tolerance for noise. But one thing I've stopped doing entirely is arguing that a cheap part is "just as good." Because in six years and 1,200+ orders, the spreadsheet has never once agreed with that claim.
Take this all with a grain of salt: it's one shop's data in one region. Different climates, different vehicle mixes, and different shops will see different numbers. But the structural logic—that labor and downtime costs dwarf part price differences—probably holds everywhere.
